AUTUMNAL DRESS EDIT

Now we are well into Autumn, we thought it was about time we talked you through some of our favourite dresses for the season! All of the below have options for long sleeves and will be perfect for laying up through into the winter months!

Friday Pattern Company- Wilder Gown

Wilder inspiration

The Wilder Gown is a firm favourite across the sewing community and is one of our best selling patterns! It is a beginner friendly pattern with options for a blouse, dress or maxi and featuring a drawstring style neckline. With it's raglan sleeves and loose silhouette this pattern makes for minimal fitting and leaves you with a high- fashion, 'throw on' garment!

The Wilder is the perfect year- round dress, wear on it's own for a statement look in the summer and layer up with a jumper/ cardigan and tights in the winter. The wilder would even look stunning when paired with an oversized blazer too!

Your fabric choice for the Wilder can really take you a long way! In the winter, we love this style in brushed cotton, viscose twills & crepes and it can even be made up in a light sweatshirting! To recreate the looks above, try the wilder in our Paisley Cotton Poplin, Wildflower Viscose Challis or our Black Bouquet Cotton Lawn

Nina Lee- Bakerloo Dress

Bakerloo inspiration

The Nina Lee Bakerloo is a statement dress & blouse pattern featuring an oversized peter pan collar with ruffle, a gathered sleeve with elasticated cuff and a gathered, loose waistline. All in all, this is an oversized silhouette with plenty of lovely details! For me, this really reminds me of Princess Di, but in a cool, modern way! This is a really satisfying make, incorporating lots of skills such as a keyhole back opening, gathers, bias binding, attaching a facing to the cuff and feeding through elastic. Nina's instructions are absolutely fantastic and will really guide you through each step making this extremely achievable, even if you are not mega experienced!

With the Bakerloo's signature collar, you can quite comfortably wear this alone and feel like you have really made an effort, but of course, we are talking about using these patterns in your Autumnal wardrobe, and the Bakerloo is also great for layering up! With the Barkerloo's gathered sleeve head, pair with a knitted sweater vest to make sure you really show off the sleeve! We also think this would look amazing with a jumper over the top, but pull your collar through so it sits on top!

The Bakerloo looks amazing in cotton fabrics, this helps to hold the shape of the collar and sleeve! For winter, a brushed cotton or possibly even a light needlecord would be a great mix! Try omitting the collar or making it detachable to get even more wear out of this shape! For a simpler look, try our 4oz Washed Denim in Medium Blue or if you prefer a print, our Down in The Daisies Cotton Lawn is ideal too! Our Hunters Tartan could be the perfect match for a festive feel!

Deer and Doe- Passiflore

Passiflore Dress inspiration

The Passiflore pattern is a little bit of a 2 in 1! This classic, vintage style dress features a double breasted style and can also be worn as a jacket! This pattern comes with options for short or long sleeves and knee or maxi length. The versatility of wearing as a dress or jacket helps you to get the most from your me- made piece and is perfect for layering up in the Autumn. This pattern has a belt detail to nip in at the waist but this can also be used as a loose closure when being worn as a jacket.

With a lot of these patterns, we advise to layer on top of the dress however this may be one where you want your t-shirts and jumpers underneath! By popping a sweatshirt and tights, you are not covering up the lovely double breasted detail! Of course, if wearing as a jacket, you can really get your layering on and wear a t-shirt, jumper and jeans under your passiflore!

The pattern calls for lighter weight fabrics with drape such as viscose, tencel and cotton lawn, this will allow your garment to remain soft however we also think a needlecord would be perfect to make this pattern up and ensures that your garment will be suitable as both a dress and jacket! Our Tencel Twills are perfect for this pattern, we love the Plumb colourway! Or if you would like something with a print, our Buta Viscose Crepe is full of Autumnal hues!

Tilly and The Buttons- Rosa Shirt Dress

Rosa Shirt dress inspiration

Pretty much everyone I know has some form of shirt dress in their wardrobe! The Rosa is a lovely classic shape with lots of details such as the collar, front and back yoke, button front and pockets. Due to these details, this one is suited to more confident beginners and intermediate sewers! With options for a dress or shirt, this pattern features a shapes silhouette with princess seams. This is the ideal pattern if you prefer a dress that doesn't have lots of extra fabric involved and is a little bit more fitted.

The Rosa shirt dress can be worn very easily with tights, boots and trainers and can be layered with either a t-shirt underneath or cardigans and jumpers on top! This pattern is ideal for fabrics with a little bit of structure such as lightweight denims, check out our 4oz Washed Denim, cottons and needlecord. Needlecord is perfect for making a really autumnal make, the extra fibres are perfect for keeping you cosy, our Vintage Rose would look beautiful in this pattern!

Megan Nielsen- Sudley Dress

Sudley dress inspiration

The Megan Nielsen Sudley is a smock style blouse or dress pattern with a choice of peter pan collar or tied neckline and with sleeve options for a long elasticated or short sleeve. With it's gathered waist, the Sudley is loose fitting and features a knee length skirt.

The Sudley dress can be layered up with jumpers and cardigans and would look especially lovely when paired with a knitted waist coat. You could also add an extra tier to the bottom of the skirt to achieve a glorious, sweeping maxi look too!

This pattern is ideal for light and medium weight fabrics, we think for the cooler seasons, viscose twill, brushed cotton and soft suiting fabrics will be ideal for this shape! Our Green & Blue Brushed Cotton Check would look beautiful in this shape! We also think our plain black viscose crepe or Naive Viscose Challis in Navy by Cousette would create a stunningly delicate looking garment!

Pauline Alice Patterns- Sedavi Dress

Sedavi dress inspiration

The Sedavi Dress is a midi or maxi length dress incorporating lots of details! Featuring 2 different necklines- a high round neck or deep v neck with front and back yokes, this dress screams of romantic, autumnal vibes. It features knife pleats framing a fitted bodice which continue through the skirt, with a subtle elastic detail at the side of the waist to add shape to the dress while maintaining comfort. It can be finished with a ruffle hem to lengthen the midi skirt to full length.

Pair this dress with boots and a chunky cardigan or jumper for the perfect autumnal look. It will also work with a roll neck top layered underneath.

This pattern is ideal for a viscose twill or crepe to highlight the romantic style, try our Sunflower Blend Tencel Crepe

Tilly and The Buttons- Lyra Shirt Dress

Lyra Dress inspiration

The Tilly and The Buttons Lyra is a smock style shirt dress including details such as collar, waist seam, button front, the choice of long or short sleeves and choice of a loose or drawstring waistline. Due to these elements, this is a great pattern for developing your skills whilst following Tilly's fantastic instructions. This pattern is listed as suitable for improvers.

The Lyra could be styled on its own with some thick wooly tights and boots when made up in a needlecord or layered up with a cardigan or jumper when made in a lighter fabric! The long sleeve features an elasticated cuff that would look soft and billowy in a viscose fabric. The Collar on the Lyra will look smart with a crew neck jumper which will show off the collar detail.

This shirt dress style will look lovely in a plain or printed cotton. For something a bit bolder, go for our Epic Spectacle or Kaleidoscope Ace Cotton Lawns. For something more subtle, our 4oz Washed Denim in Dark Blue would give you a wardrobe staple you can wear over and over, as would our Forest 21 Wale Needlecord!

Homer + Howells- Cissy

Cissy dress inspiration

The Cissy dress is a classic, simple silhouette featuring 3/4 length sleeves,  waist seam, pleated skirt, back zip and side seam pockets. This is a project suitable for confident beginners and a great way to build up your sewing skills. This is a great shape that can be made up in a variety of fabrics for different looks and is an easy one to hack too!

The Cissy is ideal for pairing with jumpers and cardigans with it's simple upper body shape, try to get a jumper that finishes on the waist seam to elongate your body. Cissy is ideal for wearing with boots and wooly tights to really keep yourself warm through the Autumnal season!

This pattern can be made up in cottons, brushed cotton, needlecord and even light weight wool fabrics! Sew one up in viscose to wear on its own in summer and layer in winter too! Our Cappucino Tencel/ Linen Slub is perfect for this look or try the Daisy Print Viscose Challis if you prefer darker colours. For extra warmth, our Charcoal Flannel is perfect!

Trend Patterns- 70's Dress

70’s dress inspiration

The TPC14 dress is a maxi length 70's style dress with lots of gathered tiers, long sleeve and a ruffle detail. This is a statement piece with lots of retro personality! This beauty of a pattern is quite a fabric hungry pattern due to the gathered tiers and ruffles so this is something to bear in mind. This is a beginner/ confident beginner pattern, you will be a gathering expert by the time you have finished this one!

The 70's dress is a strong stand alone piece, perfect for wearing with tights and boots, maybe add a hat or scarf and your favourite coat to really show it off! You could also add long sleeve base layers underneath to add extra warmth too!

This style will look amazing in a floral print, we think viscose is the ideal fabric as it will look so soft and flowy with all the gathers however cotton lawn or a light linen will be equally stunning and give a slightly different, fuller bodied look. This pattern will suit a range of scales of print, we think the Wildflower or Small Poppies Viscose will be great for this! Prefer something more abstract? Our Small Colourful Print Viscose is perfect!
