Colour Trends for Spring/Summer 2022

As you probably know already, us sewers have to be one step ahead of the upcoming trends to give us enough time to coordinate our dressmaking projects for that season. As we're leaving winter behind, most of us are starting to plan what we will want to wear during spring and if you're really organised, you might even be thinking about summer too. We have done research looking at high fashion runways, influencers, and other bloggers in the hope that we can help guide you when you're planning your spring/summer makes for 2022.

BRIGHT COLOURS

A common theme running throughout all of our research was bright colours! It is interesting as some of these colours haven't been at the forefront of fashion for quite some time. But as we all know, trends are cyclical and sooner or later, everything makes a comeback.

TRUE PURPLE

We think that purple dropped off the trending colour wheel for quite a while however, it's making a comeback! Popping up in the runways and high street fashion is the heavy use of this true purple colour - not too red toned, not too blue toned.

DAHLIA PURPLE

2022 will be all about purple, purple, purple. But this shade of purple is a bit different to the one above. Dahlia purple is a more feminine and vibrant shade that's a bit more on the pink side. This colour looks amazing paired with a true purple or lilac for a monochromatic look.

VIVID ORANGE

Orange is a colour that is often overlooked. However, on the runway, it seems to be getting a lot more attention. An amazing example, if you're wanting to delve into the world of orange, is our Orange Crepe De Chine fabric. It is weightless and perfect for flowing and drapey garments. We think it would look stunning as a Friday Pattern Company Wilder Gown or Deer & Doe Melilot shirt!

EMERALD GREEN

Emerald green is a classic colour that never goes out of fashion. It has a slight retro reference and instantly sparks joy when worn. This beautiful jewel-tone can compliment a wide array of skin tones and hair colours, particularly red heads and darker skin tones. This beautiful Dior SS22 belted dress is a vision in green! If you're thinking of trying this green, our Emerald Spots Slub Rayon would look great as a drapey dress, skirt, or top.

HOT PINK

This colour was very popular during the 2000's and is now re-entering fashion as chic as ever. This hyper-feminine pink is a bold statement for bold people and can look amazing when paired with other bold and bright colours. Our Hot Pink Viscose Crepe is a great example of a statement fabric and would look lovely as a Homer + Howells Cissy dress.

ACID LIME

This popping lime green colour gives a nod to neon yellow but with a slight green tinge. It looks amazing on neutral and warm skin tones while also being surprisingly compatible when paired with other colours such as blues, purples, oranges, and pinks. Our Lime Boiled Wool Blend Coating is the perfect choice for a statement coat for the colder, rainier days and would look amazing made up as a unisex shacket such as the Friday Pattern Company Ilford jacket.

CERULEAN

This blue is creeping its way into popularity with high fashion and high street bands as it certainly stands out amongst the usual, well-known colours. Cerulean is a tranquil shade of blue that mimic tropical waters and can look great when paired with bright green colours. It would look particularly striking when used in structural garments such as jackets and blazers!

PASTEL/POWDERY COLOURS

LAVENDER

Lavender is a classic, well-used purple and is too gorgeous to fall out of trend anytime soon. It is a universal colour that looks great on almost all skin tones and hair colours! Not to mention its ability to be paired with many other colours within the cool toned spectrum. If you want to incorporate this colour into your wardrobe, we think our Dusky Lavender Modal Poplin fabric (which has THE MOST buttery soft texture) would look elegant as a Merchant & Mills Edie top. This monochromatic, lavender outfit by Givenchy is to die for!

POPCORN YELLOW

Usually it is a punchy, vibrant yellow that is prevalent within trends however, this year it's the pastel shade of yellow that is popular among high fashion brands. This pastel yellow is also known as 'popcorn' for its very light shade and is more forgiving to cooler skin tones that wouldn't usually be able to pull off rich yellows such as an ochre colour.

POWDER BLUE

Who can resist a powder blue? It has a particular softness that speaks to almost everyone! This gentle, cool blue is the great for making basics such as blouses and shirts. It also looks amazing paired with green, navy, and burgundy as they are all cool toned.

PASTEL GREEN

Bright greens can be dazzling but something about this pastel green is truly enchanting. It can be the more elegant option for when you want to wear colour in a subdued way. This colour can look amazing when paired with pink toned colours such as pale pink and lavender because pink is a complimentary colour to green.

COLOUR COMBINATIONS

Mixing textiles with daring prints and colours seems to be creeping in a lot more as we begin the year. Many fashion brands are incorporating interesting colour combinations that we probably wouldn't have thought to put together before hand - or had the nerve to pull off! However, this brand new year should be the time that we all ditch the dull and don the vibrant colour combinations. This trend is heavily inspired by the 60's, 70's, and 80's eras that were full of powerful colour blocking and loud prints.

LAVENDER & ACID LIME

Usually we would be sceptical about mixing pastels with neons, but somehow this lavender and acidic lime green work amazingly together! This excellent interpretation by Versace uses primarily acid lime with accents of lavender however, we think these colours would look equally as stunning with lavender as the primary colour with acid lime accents. This way could be more wearable for those out there who prefer subtle with an edge.

PINK & ORANGE

Pink and orange are two beautiful colours in their own right, but together they are the perfect power couple. Particularly hot pink and bright vivid orange as they bring out the best in each other and are sure to make you stand out in the street. Versace's Spring/Summer 2022 collection embraces so many of these daring, bright combinations in a fun and elevated way. Why not try and recreate a blazer using the Nina Lee Richmond blazer and matching Nina Lee Portobello trousers for the perfect two piece?

POPCORN YELLOW & POWDER BLUE

Pastel combinations are a great way to inject colour into your wardrobe but in a more subtle way. Pastel yellow and blue is a soft combination that we think would look amazing when using a cottage-core style sewing pattern such as the Nina Lee Bakerloo blouse or dress. Another great use would be a half-and-half dress/blouse like the Homer + Howells Ingrid.

ACID LIME & VIVID ORANGE

This striking colour combination lends itself to be used within more structural, masculine garments such as jackets, jumpsuits, or shirts. Versace perfectly styles this combination using an overcoat and a pair of trousers. This look could definitely be achieved at home using the Merchant & Mills September coat and the Closet Core Pietra pants! We also think these colours would look sensational as a Closet Core Blanca Flight Suit!

PASTEL GREEN & TIFFANY BLUE

This colour combination is slightly more adventurous than your typical green and blue pairings. Of course, green and blue can be compatible in a variety of shades variations like emerald and cobalt, and spring and turquoise, but something about the softness of the pastel and the brilliance of the tiffany blue is truly unique. This combination is integrated so well by Moschino using this 1960's inspired silhouette! We also think it would look great used within a Nina Lee Park Lane dress or blouse, whether that be within a print or colour blocking.

We could definitely go on forever about all the amazing colours and combinations trending, but sadly, narrowing it down was necessary. At the very least, we hope this list sparks some inspiration for your spring and summer projects, whether you decide to embrace colour blocking or using these colours within your print choices.

Why not branch out this spring/summer 2022 and try a new colour or colour combination you haven't tried before? And if you tend to wear black and neutrals mostly, experiment one day and wear something loud and bright instead. You will definitely be surprised by the effect it has on your mood and confidence!

    • Some fab colours coming through this season, thank you for the roundup & ideas & inspiration. I particularly like the LAVENDER & ACID LIME combination but am also loving POPCORN YELLOW & POWDER BLUE. But first I’m planning a cleo top in your hot pink crepe. Have a great weekend, x
