The Rag Shop Steph

Hi, I'm Steph, the owner...

Like a lot of people out there, I learnt to sew from my mum when I was quite young, never really made anything very good but I loved it, I loved making things and I was always a really creative kid. As I grew my love for fabric grew, I went on to study Fashion Design at university and then did a Masters in Fashion and Brand Promotion.

I worked as a sample cutter for some time and this is what really set me on my path, managing and caring for the fabrics became my passion. I developed all the knowledge I had as I went on to work as a garment technologist, learning mountains about fabric and garment construction. Fabric shopping has always been a completely enchanting process for me and I’m so happy to be sharing it with you all!

This brand has been created to bring you beautiful, fashionable fabrics that you cannot wait to see in your wardrobe.

I'm Leia, the shop assistant..

I come from a fine art based background and my sewing journey began as I randomly decided in my second year of college that I wanted to do a Textile A-level, while not having any prior knowledge of sewing. Luckily, I had amazing tutors to guide me and as my sewing skills developed, I fell more and more in love with it which then led to my decision to uptaking a degree in Textiles at Manchester Metropolitan University. During university, my love for material qualities became prevalent but I was still unsure about what career path I wanted to take.

During my final months of university, I began my job here at The Rag Shop and quickly knew this was the job I wanted to continue after graduating. Since being here, I’ve developed my dressmaking skills and learnt tonnes about fabric properties and production, and loving every minute of it!
